The exhibition shines a light on Patricia Millns recent works, exploring the concept of space and silence. Based on the principle of ‘Ma’ in Japanese culture, translated as an interval or pause, this allows the viewer a space in time to reflect silently on the actual artwork. Therefore, most of her artworks are grouped together in clusters to allow the ‘space between’.
Using humble materials such as tea bags, coffee filters and doilies, the exhibition touches upon the themes of hospitality, care, nurturing and the importance of these rituals in the Arab culture. Feather nests act as shelters from the outside world, exploring notions of femininity, protectiveness and care.
In her immensely labour-intensive artistic practice, the principle of seriality features prominently. In this context, repetition, meditation and linearity are taken to the fore. The artworks on display are striking for their fragility, complexity and timelessness.
Divided into two main sections - one black and one white - this exhibition presents the artist’s practice through immersive displays using light and shadow as well as linearity and circularity as guiding principles of life.
