Performance: The Path of Tides, 2019, a Collaborative performance by Ayesha Hadhir and Camilla Singh, Performed by Camilla Singh.

In this performance Camilla Singh will follow the path of tides, inhabiting empty space within Ayesha Hadhir’s installation, tracing the rise and fall of the water that is not present. This performance is caused by the gravitational forces of the moon and sun, the rotation of the earth and the need to find solace when culture is eroded and people are called upon to embroider it’s gaps and form something new.

Alaat Haddah (Sharp Tools)

Directed by: Nujoom Alghanem 2017 | U.A.E. | PG-13 | Documentary | Arabic | 84 mins

This is a fascinating portrait of arguably the most influential figure in contemporary art in the Gulf, the late Hassan Sharif. Artist, thinker, writer and critic, Sharif died in September 2016, at the age of 65, having spent much of the past half-century expanding the parameters of art in the region, through provocative conceptual pieces, experiments in performance as well as numerous paintings, works on paper and sculptures. His old friend and collaborator, writer and filmmaker Nujoom Al Ghanem first met the artist in the early 1980s, when he was busy baffling locals in the U.A.E. with his take on ideas such as conceptualism, Modernism and performance. In Sharp Tools, which began shooting before Sharif’s death, she offers us an intimate insight into his life, speaking to friends, collaborators and commentators about his body of work and achievements.

Saturday 27 April, 2019 | 12:00 - 3:00 P.M.

Venue: Maraya Art Centre, Al Qasba, Block E, Second Floor

Workshop: Collaborative Performance with Ayesha Hadhir and Camilla Singh

In this 3 hour workshop, Hadhir and Singh will discuss and illustrate an approach to art making that is common to both of their methods of working, with a specific focus on performance art. They will talk about developing a practice of openness, trust and risk and determining how to apply that within a parallel practice fueled by rigor, research, inquisitiveness and investigation. There is an inherent connection with the body and the mind through this approach to performance art. Experiential learning and physical form come together in a body that does not have to take human physical form but can also be a manipulation of matter and form in space.

Participation fee: 100 AED.

Age: 18+.
