Artist talk with Eva Frapiccini, Ph.D. researcher in Fine Arts, University of Leeds, United Kingdom, in conversation with El-Sayed El Aswad, professor of Anthropology at the UAE University, Department of Sociology, Janet Bellotto, Associate Dean College of Arts and Creative Enterprises, Zayed University, and Alexandra Helen Macgilp, curator at the Maraya Art Centre, Sharjah.
Eva Frapiccini is an interdisciplinary artist working with a wide range of media including video, audio, installation, photography, narrative fiction and practice of participation. Her art revolves largely around language and its invisible ways of expression. Frapiccini’s practice is collaborative and constructs environments and orchestrates situations where people can actively participate and interact.
Dreams’ Time Capsule is an audio archive of dreams, an ongoing project that has collected more than 1200 testimonies from visitors who took part in different cities through the American, African, and European continents.By collecting audio recordings of dreams in different cities worldwide through the travelling project Dreams’ Time Capsule, Frapiccini collects first-hand testimonies to give an edge to the work, making her work “more human”. The time capsule, and the residency format are very useful tools for her to collect a rich archive of experiences from different cultures, which she will then study comparatively. Other strands of this research, besides dreams, are folktales and popular customs, which the artist considers the three fundamental elements at the very basis of the shaping of any collective imagery, and therefore collective memory.
Eva Frapiccini (1978, lives in Leeds, United Kingdom) took a degree in Visual Arts at DAMS in Bologna and studied Photography at the European Institute of Design. She uses a wide range of media including video, audio, installation, photography, narrative fiction and practice of participation.
Her works, held in public and private collections including those of Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and the MAMbo Museum of Bologna, have been shown in exhibitions, including in 2014 and 2012 “Portrait of the young (Wo)man artist” and “The History I have never lived. Indirect Witness”, both curated by Marcella Beccaria at the Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea; in 2012 “Science & Fiction: New Death” at FACT, Liverpool; in 2011 “Angry, Young and Radical” at Nederlands Fotomuseum, Rotterdam, Mutation I at the Maison de la Photographie, Paris, and the Gropius Bau Museum, Berlin. She has also taken part in the Alwan 338 Public Art Festival Bahrain, the 12th Architecture Biennale in Venice, in the Italian Pavilion, the Rome Photography Festival, The European Month of Photography, and PhotoEspana. She received many prizes and nominations, among them the nomination for the FOAM Paul Huf Award and the International Award for Public Art, Hong Kong.
Her project Dreams' Time Capsule has been shown internationally at the Townhouse Gallery in Cairo, the Arkitekturmuseet of Stockholm, Kim? Contemporary Art Space in Riga, and in 2016, it will be exposed in Dubai, at the Sikka Art Fair, in Sharjah at the Maraya Art Centre, and in the United Kingdom at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Since 2011, she teaches at the Fine Arts Academy of Bologna, the European Institute of Design in Turin, and until 2015 she has been a tutor in the Master of Fine Art Imaging at the Fondazione Fotografia of Modena.
From October 2015, she attends to the practice-based Ph.D. in Fine Art at the University of Leeds, United Kingdom. Frapiccini's works are represented by the Alberto Peola Gallery in Turin, Italy, since 2009
