Join us for an artist talk by Dr. Nick Ferguson from Richmond, the American International University in London. He will discuss his new outdoor commission Futuro Estate in Imitation Game.
Futuro Estate extends the artist’s research into political histories of the built environment, focusing on bird life on the seafront area of Sharjah. This desert city on the Arabian Gulf has undergone rapid development over the last fifty years, its economy buoyed by the trade of oil that has been found in the region. Yet the arid landscape and intense summer heat have imposed multiple constraints on habitation, necessitating advancements in architecture and engineering which have rendered Sharjah a test site for creative dwelling. If, increasingly, climate change and global population expansion are defining elements of our time, it is possible that Sharjah, at technological level at least, may be a precursor of the directions cities might evolve elsewhere.
