The exquisite corpse was an exercise practiced by the surrealists in the spirit of collaboration between artists. One artist would start a drawing on a folded sheet of paper, only to pass it on to another artist who would then complete a second portion of the drawing and then pass it on to a final artist who would complete the drawing. The workshop will apply the same exercise in the making of cutout puppets typically used for animation.
Participants will be provided with various prints of well-known images of full human figures (i.e. paintings, sculptures, sketching etc…). Each participant will select few images and proceed to segmenting them as demonstrated by the instructors. The participants will then assemble the pieces of the puppet using joints provided in class. Upon completely attaching one set of limbs, or a body part, the participant will then pass the puppet to the next participant, who will then add the next set of limbs from their own pile of assorted puppet segments. The puppet will pass ten times before being completed. The resulting puppet can then be used by the participants to experiment with cutout animation on a station set-up in the workshop.
