6th Annual Art Jameel Photography Award

Maraya Art Centre has joined up with Art Jameel in support of the 6th 'Art Jameel Photography Award' (AJPA). Acting as Art Jameel's U.A.E. partner, Maraya Art Centre will work continuously over the next few months to extensively promote the award. This endeavour will culminate in the centre hosting a two-week exhibition in February 2016, showcasing the works of the AJPA's winning photographers. The award seeks to discover talented photographers and help them develop their skills and exhibit exceptional photography. For the first time, this year's competition is open to nationals and residents across the GCC, having previously been open only to residents in Saudi Arabia.

About the workshops

A series of photography workshops will be hosted in Maraya Art Centre to help aspiring applicants tackle the ‘Transitions’ theme directly and also help answer any questions that people interested in applying may have, UAE Based photographer and children’s book author Alia Al Shamsi will lead one workshop teaching students how to develop conceptual ideas into a project, and another workshop will be taught by Reem Saeed, also a UAE based photographer and founder of MOBIPIX UAE, who will conduct a photo walk exploring the natural environment to create photo stories with the ‘Transitions’ theme.

As part of the award, applicants will be invited to workshops led by experienced and internationally known photographers and experts held in Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE and Kuwait between August and November 2015.

About the competition

The competition has received wide support by arts and cultural organisations across the Gulf. This year, the AJPA’s photography partners are Nuqat, Kuwait, Maraya Centre, East Wing, UAE and MuscArt, Oman. The competition is also supported by its cultural partner, the Saudi Arabian Society of Culture and Arts (SASCA).

The theme of the competition this year is ‘Transitions’, reflecting today’s changing society. Male and female applicants aged 18 years and above are required to produce a single photograph, or series of photographs that capture transitions from social, conceptual, cultural, economic, personal or even technical perspectives.

Photographers from different fields are encouraged to enter. In 2013 the competition was opened to residents of all nationalities living in Saudi Arabia and this year is accepting submissions from across the GCC countries.

Awards and winning works

The winners will be announced at an Awards Ceremony in December 2015. Winners will receive cash prizes, the opportunity for residency and the chance to participate in Art Jameel’s activities in Saudi Arabia and abroad. Winning work will be promoted online and in print, both regionally and internationally.

The final winning works will go on display in a travelling exhibition, which will start in Jeddah in January 2016, and in Sharjah in February at the Maraya Art Centre.
