When: Saturday 05 Jan, 2019 03:00 p.m. - Saturday 05 Jan, 2019 04:00 p.m.
Venue: Maraya Art Centre, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
Join Russian speaking Exhibition Tour Guide Suheyla Takesh on a tour of the first institutional solo presentation of Saudi-Palestinian artist Dana Awartani in the U.A.E.
“The Silence Between Us” brings together pieces of the artist’s practice that reflect on her use of poetry and light, both elements that become key tools to figuratively and (at times) literally reading her work. Awartani lives and works in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and has developed a practice by blending her conceptual training at Central Saint Martins with her traditional craft study at the Prince’s School of Traditional Art, thus creating a dialogue between the past and the present.
The exhibition shows pieces that derive from the artist’s work with textile, woodwork, and glass production methods that are particularly still active in India, as well as her manuscript illuminations. Through these mediums, light activates, distorts or reveals at different turns throughout the gallery space as the viewer encounters each piece.
The exhibition is in collaboration with the Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival and runs from 20 December, 2018 – 18 February, 2019 curated by Laura Metzler.
