On Friday, 29 January, Italian traditional hand puppet theatre master Bruno Leone will present his acclaimed show: 'The stories of Pulcinella'. The performance, which is a master class in the art of the “guarattelle", tells the story of Pulcinella and his quarrel with a vindictive dog owner who stands between him and his one true love. The puppet Pulcinella, which is always on stage right of the puppeteer, beats time with his magic voice, obtained with the secret instrument “the pivetta”. The story of Pulcinella is similar to Karaguze in the Arabic and Turkish culture of Shadow Theatre.
Bruno Leone is the last of the Neapolitan “guarattelle” maestros, having learnt the art from Nunzio Zampella in 1978. The art of the “guarattelle” draws its vitality from marrying memory with recent events, a process which is developed in careful collaboration with the audience. Bruno Leone's tireless work in the area of “guarattelle” has contributed significantly to the revival of the genre, which is very important in Neapolitan and European cultural history.
Macadi Nahhas’s puppetry workshops and performances are in collaboration with Maqam Productions.
This event is open for the public free of charge.
