Time: 12:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.
Venue: Maraya Art Centre, Al Qasba, Block (E), Third Floor (Maraya Art Gallery) Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
Maraya Art Centre, in collaboration with Athr Gallery is presenting a project from the ‘Subtitles’ series by artist Ayman Yossri Daydban as part of a public art project.
The project will re-examine both the terms ‘public’ and ‘art’. The Pop Art movement explored this by transmuting commercial advertising (an extreme ‘public’ phenomenon) onto canvas.
When the film still is removed from the context of the film, it is re-born as a unique source of content, with no past or alternative function.
Exclusively for this temporary, the artist will produce a new sub-series of the ‘Subtitles’ entitled ‘Change’, conjuring the association with time. To build upon its transience, and in contrast to the aim of commercial advertising, ‘Change’ will never be produced and sold in the same sizes or formats.
The purpose of the project is to involve the community, and engage their sense of ‘place’ and ‘self’ within their society. Therefore, while the ‘Subtitle’ concept conveys the multi-national community of the UAE, ‘Change’, goes further and explores the theme of time and transience, revealing the country’s constant and startling metamorphosis and evolution, and engaging the viewer to think beyond the present moment, into the unknown.
This project is supported by Athr Gallery.
